Mae JEMISON, astronaut

This exhibition presents in eight portraits of women from all over the world who have played a major role in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It’s:

  • Rosalind Franklin
  • Cynthia Breazal
  • Mae Jemison
  • Gladys West
  • Tu Youyou
  • Dr Hayat Sindi
  • Juliana Rotich
  • Maria Da Penha

The posters were made by illustrators from South America, Africa, the Middle East and China.

The objectives

From these eight portraits of women scientists, discover the existence of women scientists of yesterday and today and become aware of the importance of their work. Highlight, through free production, women scientists or important elements concerning the place of girls and women in the scientific field.

The students of Madame Simon (second, first, final) will present their productions at the CDR lycée from February 11 (International Day of Girls and Women in Science) to March 8 (International Women’s Day) 2022. Ms. Krynicki, a documentalist professor, coordinates and supports this system. The exhibition is on loan from theEspace Mendès France in Poitiers.

The adventure continues

At the end of the visit, the students are therefore called upon to produce work in the form that suits them:

  • Poem / text in the manner of Rudyard Kipling; Prévert; La Fontaine…on equality between male scientist and female scientist or more generally male-female.
  • Drawing / illustration on the theme “women scientists”.
  • Poster/Quiz on women scientists (in general or in a particular field).
  • Timeline on girls’ access to education, science and public recognition.
  • Explain the Matilda effect (poster, video…).
  • Produce statistics on, for example, the distribution of girls in Scientific Specialties in high school; the presence of girls in higher scientific education (university, engineering schools); the presence of women in scientific professions…

An exhibition at the CDR will allow us to discover these works and perhaps to collect some testimonies from our high school students. We look forward to seeing you soon.
