Archery: aiming well

On the weekend of 20 to 22 January 2023 Enzo B, a 3rd year student, goes to Nîmes. A first for him who has only been practicing archery for three years. The "South of France Archery – Nîmes" brings together the best archers in the world. A unique opportunity to meet the world's elite and archery enthusiasts. It is the largest indoor archery tournament in Europe. Some 40 nationalities are represented, coming from the 5 continents. Everyone hopes to win this French stage of the indoor world circuit. For Enzo it is about tasting the pleasure of competition and admiring the technique of the greatest.

From beginnings at the archery club to competition

It all starts in early 2020. A friend of Enzo advises him this sport and it is with the "Archers de la Touvre" that he starts. What does he like about this sport? Precision, concentration, being able to refocus on yourself and that it is an individual sport. To start the club lends him the equipment then Enzo invests to have his own bow. This is where we learn that, contrary to our childhood memories or a few tries on outings or during the holidays, there is not a single arc format. The photo at the top of the article allows us to distinguish three different arcs.

There is the classic arc or "recurve" to which we can add stabilizers and sight: it is that of Enzo (right and left arc). There is also the compound bow (that of the two girls) and the "barebow" bow (that of the archer in the center of the photo).

Several steps before qualification

Of course, as with every competition, there are several steps to qualify. For our 5 Charente archers, each one plays in a different category. Enzo is under 21. Each shoots alone (30 arrows) and then the first 16 compete in a duel. Enzo scored a score of 491, higher than his personal score. The coach's advice and observation of other archers are very useful and valuable. For a first, it's a nice score.

Of course, not all competitions are of this magnitude. What is certain is that this tournament boosted Enzo and made him want to continue and even accentuate his practice, do more training at the club (go from one to three times a week: Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday). Thursday is the most difficult day to reconcile with homework and family life since the schedule is 19:00 / 21:00; You have to love your sport and hang on to hold on. His goal: to try to qualify in three years.

With the good weather our archers will be able to shoot outdoors and this is a big plus, the sensations are not the same. Good to know: under 13s shoot up to 40 meters, beyond the regulatory distance is 60 and 70 meters. We wish Enzo success in his sport and achieve his goals. In the meantime, congratulations on the work done.

And to approach the atmosphere of the tournament:
